SHIBORI
Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist dye technique for creating different pattern designs on fabric. Indigo is the dye that has been traditionally used.
My first attempt at Shibori was with a box of Jacquard indigo dye on the driveway at my daughter’s house. I had brought many folded and twisted fabrics, including T shirts for my grandchildren to try. After that first feeble attempt I began to read and study more. I discovered many resist techniques for surface design. The technique I love best is a simple running line stitch. I then took a workshop with experts on Japanese techniques. Every step of the process fascinates me, from choosing the fabric to the chemistry of the indigo vat.
This work includes many traditional Japanese patterns along with some abstract designs. As an artist I usually begin work by thinking of how to make a mark on some substrate. It is as simple as that but sometimes it gets complicated. Dyeing with Indigo is a complex multivariable process, and it can be challenging to get the results that you want.
While an exhibition offers you different views of pattern designs, it also gives a window into my process and you play a big part in the overall process. The viewing of any art completes the circle and closes the loop for the artist.
